Neither of them will kill ya. Braun or Fielder are fine there, too. Actually, people were getting heated over the Braun vs. Kemp debate on Twitter this morning.

Let's put it this way ...
The safe pick is Braun.
The sexy pick is Kemp.
The I-draft-based-on-position-scarcity pick is Utley.
The I-value-HRs-above-all-else pick is Fielder.

I think that's a good way to look at it. There's no science or reasoning to back this up, but I feel like Utley isn't the pick here anymore despite how often he's helped me in the past with "position scarcity" strategy you mention.
That's actually a pretty good position to be in. Pick #4 might be the spot to be this year depending on who there when it comes back around to you.

I like pick #7. Just take whomever of the four is left and get the better pick in round two.

So, of course, I end up with the #4 pick in the Hurler league. Decisions, decisions ...

It's so true.
But do you know what drafting with my heart got me last year? Jose Reyes on two teams.

Don't draft Mr. Rihanna unless you are prepared for the tsunami of frustration that will rush over you when Torre slides him back down to 7th in the order. I'm just sayin.

Oh, I lived it last year, what with Kemp on three of my four teams. It can't happen again. It can't, I say!

I think it completely depends on whether or not you would feel safe with a sleeper/second tier 2b option later in the draft. Personally, I would take Utley 95 times out of 100. The difference between Kemp and a 3rd or 4th round OFer is less than Utley and that same 3rd or 4th round 2b'er.

a combo of kemp/cano(adp48) will have better rbi/ba while utley/granderson(adp49) has the edge in r/hr. @35sb from either duo. closer than 95 to 5 imho. would rather have the higher ba so that you could have a later option for a high power/low ba player like dunn, pena, or uggla without destroying an entire category. if you go utley you might need a ba boost elsewhere. i don`t think either combo is significantly better than the other. apples and oranges. choice could also be influenced by which players are targeted for the 2nd/3rd round

Yeah, I suppose that it matters more where you think you can get your other targets. Personally, I'd still rather have Utley at 4, but I'm not 100% on that. Given I have the 7 spot, in the draft, I'm working with a whole other set of problems.

Reread the fifth post in this thread. It's the easiest pick in the draft! (No, I will not trade you, though. I'm leaning toward Utley. But, goddamn, I love me some Matt Kemp.)

I'm not going to be that disappointed in any of those guys, it's just that my personal fantasy crushes are not justified picks at 7. I love to love they guys on my team. But, maybe they'll open my heart...

if there`s a guy that you really want at #7 and you think he`ll be gone by #17 , why shouldn`t you go for it? there`s a lot of talent in the early rounds this year. there`s nothing wrong with building a team of players you like as long as you don`t go overboard
