Tigers-Twins fantasy implications E-mail

I wanted to get a quick post up about Tuesday's one-game playoff between Detroit and Minnesota and its fantasy implications, although at this point, it's a bit of guesswork whether these stats will count in your league or not. I can tell you that, with Yahoo, the last regularly scheduled day of the season always remains the last day of the fantasy season, too -- no matter what play-in or make-up games might still need to take place. In fact, Yahoo did not count stats from either the 2007 Rockies-Padres or the 2008 Twins-White Sox play-in games.

However, ESPN and CBS did count stats from the 2007 game toward their standard roto leagues. I'm not sure if they did the same last year, as we sadly never posted a follow-up to this piece right here. (Shame on us.) Bottom line: It's quite possible that, if you use either ESPN or CBS, any Tigers and Twins on your roster might still accumulate stats for you on Tuesday. (And, if you're in a close race for a money spot, it couldn't hurt to go pick some up.) I really don't have any more information than that right now, but if anyone plays at ESPN or CBS and comes across more concrete information, please post it in the comments below. I'll update this post, as necessary.

UPDATE: ESPN is currently running this message for at least all of their standard roto leagues: "Note that stats from the Twins-Tigers one game playoff, scheduled for Tuesday, October 6, WILL count towards your league standings." I'm still not sure if those stats will count in head-to-head leagues, though.

UPDATE #2: Still a good bit of confusion about whether CBS will count Tuesday stats or not. You might want to keep checking this thread right here for info as it comes in.

UPDATE #3: Fantasy scribe Collin Hager of Elmhurst Pub Roundtable (a good fantasy blog, BTW) confirms via tweet that ESPN will not be counting Tuesday's stats in head-to-head leagues. But, again, they will count in standard roto leagues.

UPDATE #4: CBS managers playing in standard roto leagues are now seeing this note: "The Twins and Tigers will be playing a game on Tuesday October 6th to decide who will go to the MLB playoffs. This game will count in our leagues as a regular season game for all scoring types. Daily leagues will be able to set a lineup for this game, while Weekly leagues will use the same lineup from the final scoring period."

UPDATE #5: Confirming what we already guessed all along, Yahoo is now running this note on all of their league pages: "Please note the Tuesday, October 6 game between the Tigers and the Twins was not a scheduled regular season game and will NOT count towards fantasy scoring."

Figures Yahoo wouldnt do it. I am tied in a championship, and hits are tied as well. I have Beckham and Cabrera. One more hit, and I'd take home the crown.

One of the many reasons I am ready to move on from Yahoo after a one-year experiment.

ESPN has posted that Tuesday's stats WILL count. It's posted on the individual league page of the league I'm in, where I'm trailing by one point. Meantime, first place guy loaded up on all the Twins/Tigers.

I actually think that it's a BAD thing to count the stats of any extra play-in games for the exact reason calibob02 just mentioned: It allows managers to cheat the system by picking up every available player from the two teams left to play. Plus, even if you already have some Twins and Tigers on your team, why should you get credit for their 163rd game when every other MLB player only gets 162? It's kind of bullshit.

Hey, Calibob -- can you cut and paste the entire ESPN note to these comments so I can include it in my main post? I don't play in any ESPN leagues, so I can't get to it. Folks on the ESPN boards seem to think that stats will count for roto leagues but not for H2H.

Bob,

Full disclosure here: I really want the season to end today. I'm the "Nick Adenharts" of the Fantasy Hurler Invitational. I just tied for first in our league as of today, and the tiebreaker is Team ERA, which I won, so if it's over, I've pulled off a come-from-behind.

Thanks, calibob! One more question: Does the note appear on the league page for a standard roto league, on the league page for a H2H league or on some kind of main page that covers all ESPN fantasy leagues? I ask because H2Hers seem to think they won't be affected.

Hi Bob,

This is a private non-H2H league, put it is completely standard using all the standard settings. I've asked the commissioner whether he posted the notice or ESPN did. I will get back to you as soon as I hear.

Thanks, calibob. Keep us updated. I'm pretty sure that's an ESPN note. And I'm betting only roto-leaguers see it. (Longtime ESPN H2H-ers are saying on the various boards that play-in games have never counted in ESPN H2H leagues before.)

Bob, I'm 99% sure, but I don't want to give out bad information. However, there's a very official looking announcement from ESPN on the League Page.

However, he's an interesting sidebar. As I mentioned, the first place team discovered this before I did and picked up most of the Tigers/Twins. However, he left behind Carlos Gomez and Aubrey Huff. When I tried to "set" them for Tuesday, ESPN would not accept my reset. So, for now, I already own Miguel Cabrera and Joe Mauer and they're in my line-up but the other two losers aren't.

It's ESPN-wide. Razzball's now got a post up with commenters there mentioning the exact same note. I really want to know if H2H-ers can see it. Any ESPN H2H-ers want to check for us?

Bob, I don't want to sound disloyal, but the ESPN league I'm in is a Razzball league. So a lot of the info I'm getting is from the same place as you.

Calibob, you traitorous son of a bitch!

Nah, just messin' with ya.

I still think it's an ESPN-wide note. (Plus, honestly, I'm doubting league commishes can make the decision whether or not to count Tuesday's stats and manually adjust.)

My info's all based on what's occurred in previous seasons (which is how I know Yahoo won't count Tuesday's stats, unless they do a total about-face) and the chatter taking place at various fantasy forums (ESPN, etc.). Others have made mention of the note.
