Managers and the art of pitcher abuse E-mail

We all know about Dusty Baker's ruining of Mark Prior (having him throw 3400+ pitches in his early 20s ... how'd that go?) and Kerry Wood. But there's a few other managers out there who are making me pull my hair out.

Jim Leyland, what is your fucking problem? Stop leaving Verlander and Jackson out there too long. When they're at 100+ pitches through six or seven innings, Managing 101 in the 21st century is HAVE SOMEONE WARMING UP AND PULL THE STARTER AT THE FIRST SIGNS OF TROUBLE. I must have watched seven to 10 earned runs tacked onto my team's stats because Leyland tries to old-school a few more innings out of these guys on a repeated basis. I know Detroit's bullpen sucks, but it's May, and haven't enough Tigers starters watched their arms ruined by overuse?

Raise your hand if you know that Mariano Rivera should not pitch more than one inning at a time? Joe Girardi, put your hand back down. Joe, please don't ruin a closer I spent a decently high draft pick on and leave me with Brad Lidge as my main source of saves. Rivera hasn't gone more than one inning in years, and I believe Girardi has now called him to do it at least twice, maybe three times ... for games in April and May.

What is wrong with these guys?

Joe Girardi, aside from being a total assclown, does not know the first thing about managing a pitching staff. His hiring is honestly unfathomable to me, and I could give a rat's ass about the Yankees or the Red Sox. He absolutely mauled that Marlins staff of his, sending Josh Johnson and Anibal Sanchez to arm surgery. It's pretty clear that he can't manage whatever is left of that Yankee bullpen, either. They have got nothing in it other than Rivera, so he has to abuse him in April and May. Having Mo in two leagues, I curse Girardi's name like you do....
And Leyland? I think he's always been overrated. Hell, I or any of our Hurler regulars could have managed that Marlin team he had to a World Series. And that old school tough guy crap has to go, especially in the age of drug testing. These arms cannot come back from Tommy John surgery in six months anymore.

Rivera had 13 outings of 1+ innings last year (and only one L/BS in the group, if I'm reading things right) and only two so far this year, which puts him on pace for maybe 8 or 10 in 2009, unless Girardi stretches him out some more.

It was his longest outing since last August. August is not April or June. Also, he wasn't coming off shoulder surgery last August. And he hadn't complained of arm fatigue. And he wasn't a year older.

And Joe Girardi can keep his greedy paws off my best reliever.

Maybe Leyland recalls when starting pitchers were expected to go late into games "IN MAY". Maybe today's pitchers are simply too soft. How do you ruin somebody's arm who's job it is to throw. To throw warm-ups, to do bullpen work and to long toss and to throw on off days. I'm sick of pitch counts and this misconception that once at a 100 pitches their arm is gonna fall off. They are pitchers. THROW the ball.

Dusty? Dusty, is that you?

In all seriousness, the mid eighties crap that you could sling across the plate to 150 pound, 5'8" shortstops would get crushed today. The modern pitcher has to work much, much harder to get out modern, juiced up batters who are hitting a juiced up ball in tiny little parks.

As a Tigers fan, I have seen Leyland do this from time to time over the last 4 years. As far as Verlander goes, he likes to say he looks at how the pitcher is throwing rather than the pitch count. If Verlander is still throwing 98 after 100 pitches, he'll let him go to 120. If his velocity drops, he'll yank him.

As far as Jackson goes, I was surprised he sent him back in after a 1 hour, 13 minute rain delay in his last start. Now, he had 4 innings in and the Tigers were ahead 9-1, so he let him get his W. But I was shocked when he pitched the 6th and the 7th as well.

Leyland will baby his young pitchers at the GM's request, as he is doing with Porcello this year (limiting him to 85-95 pitches), but once you're in the league a few years, all bets are off. And as you say, the Tigers bullpen was strapped the last time through the rotation because of a 13 inning game, and the fact that Gallaraga has sucked balls the last 4 times out and Willis is now wasting a rotation spot.

Yes. Thank you Leyland for letting Edwin go 8 innings this morning and throw 132 pitches when he had a stellar gem at the end of 7 against Texas. IMO if a pitcher is throwing a gem but has more then 7 or 8 H + BB's I'd rather have him pulled for relief than to take a chance that he gets unlucky in the 8th like he did today.

Today was fucking miserable for me. Watching Leyland abuse Edwin was brutal. Dude, he was at 104, he's young, and it's mid May. Don't send him out for the eighth. If you do, when he walks the lead-off man, how about bringing in a lefty to face Blalock?

Leyland=piece of shit.
