This is why you (a) never hold your fantasy draft too early and (b) never overspend on pitching. Pitchers and catchers reported to camp just this week, but already five notable major-league hurlers -- Daisuke Matsuzaki, Ted Lilly, Ross Detwiler, Kelvim Escobar and Joel Hanrahan -- face uncertain futures thanks to recently discovered injuries. The severities differ. (Sounds like Dice-K and Lilly may or may not be okay, while Detwiler and Hanrahan are definitely going to miss time. And who knows what in the hell is going on with the always-injured Escobar?)
And, of course, it's not like these five are exactly equals when it comes to fantasy value. Dice-K and Lilly are semi-coveted starters. Detwiler is an up-and-comer for Washington who was sure to be drafted in NL-only leagues. Escobar and Hanrahan planned to start the season as setup men for their respective clubs and would only be owned by managers playing in larger leagues that count holds. But regardless of their worth, all five now come with a bonus question mark stamped on their forehead.
Truthfully, I'm not even all that surprised. It seems I write a post very similar to this one every year. Trusting major league pitchers to stay healthy and serve as reliable fantasy producers remains a dangerous, dangerous proposition.
